The figures for the first six months of this year show that we performed more surgeries, more consultations, and more diagnostic and therapeutic exams,” said Micaela Freitas, Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection.
Official data reveals that between January and June, Sesaram carried out 9,812 surgeries and held 226,751 hospital consultations, alongside 56,716 emergency attendances.
Ms Freitas underlined that the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP coalition) will continue investing in modern equipment and workplace improvements, while also reinforcing human resources and adopting tools to boost efficiency.
Sesaram currently employs around 6,000 professionals, including 816 doctors, 2,025 nurses, 333 senior diagnostic and therapeutic technicians, 842 operational assistants, 843 auxiliary health technicians, and 636 administrative staff.
The secretary noted that the executive has made “every effort” to attract and retain health professionals in the region, pointing out that “doctors already earn more in Madeira than on the mainland.”
However, she stressed that recruitment is not solely dependent on salaries. “Attracting professionals is also about improving working conditions, and this is clearly reflected in the new hospital,” she said.
The Central and University Hospital of Madeira, now under construction, is designed to be a benchmark institution, not only in the delivery of healthcare but also in the field of medical research, consolidating the island’s role as a regional leader in healthcare provision.
