The data released shows that in 2022, each Portuguese person wasted 184 kilograms of food, an increase compared to the 180.6 kilograms in 2021 and the 174.5 kilograms in 2020.
In 2023, 1.9 million tons of food were wasted in Portugal, and the main "culprits" were families, with 66.8 million tons of this waste attributed to them. Retail and distribution accounted for 12% of the total waste, restaurants, hotels, and similar establishments for 11.5%, primary production for 6.8%, and industry for 2.9%.
From 2020 to 2023, there was an overall increase in household waste, but a decrease in 2023. Retail and distribution waste has been steadily increasing, and in the restaurant industry, there was an increase from 2021 to 2022 and a slight increase in 2023.
In primary production, the data do not indicate a trend, and the industry has been reducing waste.
Portugal has been ranked as the fourth European Union country that wastes the most food. Each year, Europe throws away approximately 88 million tons of food.
