The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Vila Real, Setúbal, Lisbon, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre are under a yellow warning from 9:00 am today until 6:00 pm on Thursday.
The south coast of Madeira Island is also under a yellow warning from 9:00 am today until 6:00 pm on Thursday due to persistently high maximum temperatures.
The IPMA (National Institute of Marginal and Environmental Management) forecasts temperatures to rise starting today, with temperatures reaching the highest levels in the interior of the northern and central regions, the Tagus Valley, and the southern region, with values between 34 and 39 degrees Celsius, well above normal for this time of year.
The minimum temperature is expected to reach its highest values, around 20 degrees Celsius, in the eastern Algarve, gradually spreading to some areas of the western Algarve and the interior of the Alentejo and central regions, particularly the highlands.
"Accompanying this temperature rise, there will be a general weakening of the wind and an increase in cloud cover in some areas of the northern and central coast, where temperatures will remain lower near the coastline," according to the Institute.
This episode of hot weather is expected to persist until Friday, with temperatures forecast to drop sharply over the weekend, according to the IPMA, to normal or slightly below normal values for the time of year. Maximum temperatures may drop by 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in some areas.
