The Portuguese edition will feature Liz McColgan, Olympic athlete, world 10,000-metre champion, and winner of the London, New York, and Tokyo Marathons. As a SheUltra ambassador, McColgan brings not only her elite sporting credentials to the Algarve debut, but also her personal story: in 2010, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has since become a passionate advocate for screening and early detection. Her presence at the event symbolises resilience, courage, and the spirit of unity that SheUltra represents.
Founded in 2024 in Wales by Huw Williams — diagnosed with stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer — SheUltra was created to offer a safe, inclusive space for all women. Since then, it has travelled through the UK and Italy, bringing together thousands of participants and raising over €92,000 for women’s cancer support organisations.
In Portugal, the event also carries a strong community commitment. In addition to fundraising via JustGiving links, SheUltra has already donated €3,000 from the SheUltra Legacy Fund to the Faro oncology centre and will be providing two training mannequins for breast examination, allowing nursing teams to practise and demonstrate self-check techniques.
The Portuguese organisation is led by a local team aiming to mobilise the community, encourage participation in other events, and use SheUltra as a platform for engagement, solidarity, and health.
“SheUltra isn’t about competition — it’s about connection, health, and courage. We want every woman to cross the finish line thinking: if I can do this, I can do anything.” — Huw Williams
