Last year was a different story when it appeared that the government’s 2025/6 animal welfare and shelter grants were perhaps being greatly reduced, if not axed completely. The Association for the Protection of Animals Algarve not only raises money for its own SNiP campaign. (Spaying & Neutering Programme) mainly for the increasing cat-colonies, but also to assist other groups, large and small, to feed their cats.

“The cat population is a huge problem. They reproduce at an alarming rate. With separate fathers in the same pregnancy. Sometimes multiple pregnancies can occur.” Not all kittens survive. Raising money is always a problem.

“We cannot thank our members and followers enough. Events and pop-ups are always popular, and it is a good way to meet our community.” APAA’s World Animal Day Lunch, hosted by Ans and Alfred, raised over 400€. “It all helps. We cannot survive without the public’s help. Not only money, donations but time.”

We will try and convince the Câmara during our visit to ensure funds are available at the Portimão Hospital for animals. At the moment public have to pay on the spot for accidents, found on the street, and emergencies encountered with abandoned animals. Often they cannot afford it.” SEPNA is a body which is supposed to help in such situations, but due to the demand are often only able to offer a telephone number for a vet or the hospital. “We also are desperate for food to feed the growing cat-colony population.” Nothing is taken for granted. But as Jenny knows, all the associations and animal welfare groups are relieved to receive the grants in the first place. Whilst caps are in hand and deep breaths are taken, planning ahead for Christmas and final shopping events and pop-ups.
