According to Lusa news agency, a source from the Algarve sub-regional command of Civil Protection said that the main incidents refer to flooding in homes, shops and garages, and that work is now underway to drain the roads.
The rain fell with greater intensity between 6 am and 7 am, coinciding with high tide, and during that time a value of 30.8 millimetres of precipitation was recorded by the meteorological station of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) at Faro Airport, it added.
According to the same source, the most affected areas were those "that are historically more vulnerable" whenever there are episodes of intense precipitation, and that present problems due to water accumulation, namely the historical centres.
In Vila Real de Santo António and Faro, municipal command posts were established to monitor and coordinate the operational situation, and resources from other municipalities were mobilized to reinforce support.
In the city of Tavira, also in the eastern Algarve, there were also some floods, he concluded.
