Information available on the IPMA website indicates that the red warning, the most severe on a scale of three, has been in effect since 12:26pm.
“Locally, there may be accumulated [precipitation values] of around 40 millimetres/hour,” it states.
The Faro district, corresponding to the Algarve region, is also under orange warnings – the second most severe level – until 6pm today due to forecasts of precipitation, rough seas, and wind.
The red warning is the most severe and is issued whenever there are extreme situations, while the orange warning is issued by IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere) whenever there is a "meteorological situation of moderate to high risk," and the yellow warning when there is a risk to certain activities dependent on the weather situation.
Storm Claudia has been affecting mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago since Wednesday with heavy rain, wind, and strong sea conditions.
