According to data from the Central Administration of the Health System (ACSS), in addition to these vacancies in MGF, 15 of the 17 available positions in the area of ​​Public Health were also filled.

By comparison, in 2024, the second round of recruitment resulted in 63 vacancies (out of 225 available) being filled in MGF and nine in Public Health (out of a total of 15).

Considering that each General and Family Medicine doctor has, on average, a list of 1,550 patients, filling these vacancies will allow at least 77,500 patients to have a family doctor, including more than 37,000 in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, the most underserved.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, there were 84 open family doctor positions, and more than 70% remained unfilled, leaving only 24 filled.

For example, nationally, the Amadora Sintra Local Health Unit (ULS) had the most Family Medicine specialists placed, with 9 of 12 positions filled (75%).

In the Central region, there were 29 Family Medicine positions, and eight were filled; in the North, there were 18, and 15 were filled; in the Alentejo, only two of the eight open positions were filled; and in the Algarve, three positions had been opened, and only one was filled.

In 2025, across the two competitions to hire newly specialised family medicine doctors, a total of 281 positions were filled, enabling the appointment of a family doctor for an additional 435,550 users.

In Public Health, only two of the 17 total positions remained unfilled in the second round of competitions – one in the Central region (Local Health Unit of Guarda) and another in Alentejo (ULS Alto Alentejo).
