According to the results of the annual vote, which included travellers from 154 countries, Câmara de Lobos (Madeira), Lisbon and the Costa Vicentina (Algarve) are among the favourite choices of world tourists for this year, standing out for their unique combination of authenticity, sustainability and natural beauty.
Madeira
The Madeiran village of Câmara de Lobos ranked highest among Portuguese destinations, placing 6th. Described as an "irresistible" destination, the town was praised for its vibrant and timeless atmosphere, where the colourful fishing boats contrast with imposing cliffs and excellent gastronomy.
Mainland Portugal
Lisbon secured 9th place, with the jury and voters highlighting the rare balance between the capital's historical charm and modern creativity. Rounding out the national representation, the Costa Vicentina placed 12th, billed as "Europe's most coveted secret"—a wild and sunny alternative to the traditional Algarve, marked by unspoiled nature and far from the crowds.
The European ranking
The 2026 ranking is led by Madrid (Spain), followed by Nicosia (Cyprus) and Stajerska (Slovenia). Although Italy dominated the list in terms of volume (with seven entries), Portugal's presence is significant due to the diversity of its choices, ranging from the urban tourism of Lisbon to the natural refuge of the Costa Vicentina.
The selection of candidates by European Best Destinations is based on Eurostat growth indicators, social media popularity, and commitments to sustainability, thereby consolidating these distinctions as a seal of quality for the national tourism sector.
