At least 38 beaches have been closed off to the public for periods, for one reason or another so far this year, mostly due to illegal discharges.

That is almost double the 21 beaches temporarily restricted last year, and close to 6 percent of the country’s 608 official inland and coastal beaches. Among the closures were eight Algarve beaches, in the municipalities of Lagoa and Albufeira.
