The 74-year old man, who had been transferred from Faro Hospital to the São José, was reportedly told the hospital would not accept him due to the nature of his stroke.

He was then transferred to Coimbra Hospital in central Portugal where he died Monday morning.

The chairman of the Algarve Hospital Centre, Pedro Nunes, has since stated that protocol was followed to the letter and that an enquiry has been opened into the circumstances leading up to the man’s death.
