The heather-based harvest of DOP honey from Serra da Lousã is expected to fall by at least 80 percent this year.

“We have production losses between 75 and 85 percent”, informed the president of Lousãmel - Agricultural Cooperative of Lousã Beekeepers and Border Councils, António Carvalho.

In his opinion, “there is no doubt” that the greatest decrease in production in recent decades is a consequence of the climatic instability seen in the spring.

Due to the persistent rain in May, “the heather flower was very wet”, making less nectar and pollen available, which was followed by “a terrible heat”.
