The council of Vimioso, in the district of Bragança, north east Portugal, saves around 140 thousand euros per year after investing 1.1 million euros in the last 12 years in the conversion of conventional public lighting to LED technology.

According to data from the Vimioso Council, the saving of 140 thousand euros per year represents a reduction of 66% in expenses on public lighting in the municipality.

During the whole process of reconversion of the public lighting system, 4,423 LED bulbs were installed in the 22 districts of the council.

"We are a totally LED Council", said the mayor, adding that, along with saving financial resources, LED technology allows a "significant reduction in the emission of harmful gases, equivalent to 132 tons of CO2, in a space of eight years, which contributes to environmental welfare.

According to Jorge Fidalgo, Vimioso, is the "only" place in the area with public lighting entirely composed of LEDs.
