Damage to Portugal’s electricity distribution network is very significant, with 125 high and medium voltage lines affected, EDP Distribuição, which has 1,200 engineers on the ground supported by 700 vehicles, said

In a statement, EDP Distribuição said that because of the worsening weather conditions, it has increased its operational teams in the field and at the moment around 1,200 vehicles are operating with the support of 700 vehicles to carry out the work of reconnecting the electricity supply, under adverse weather conditions, in particular, strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall.

Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real are the areas most affected by storm Elsa.

"The municipalities most affected now are Amarante, Guimarães, Melgaço, Lousã and Cinfães," EDP Distribuição said, pointing out that the situation described is evolutionary, and currently is more concentrated in the northern area, but progressively moving south.

The company has been mobilising teams from various parts of the country for the most affected sites and using existing human resources at the different voltage levels and remains in close articulation with local and national Civil Protection structures, as well as in permanent liaison with the weather institute IPMA to ensure up-to-date information.
