Passengers who had a Delta Air Lines flight on Sunday between Ponta Delgada and New York, which was delayed due to an incident with the in-coming plane, will fly on Monday on an additional flight, the airline's source said to Lusa.

The Boeing 757, from JFK Airport in New York, "made a hard landing on runway 12 of Ponta Delgada Airport, John Paul II," on the island of Sao Miguel, about 9.30 a.m. (local time in Lisbon).

The impact with the runway caused damage to the fuselage and landing gear of the aircraft, but there were no injuries.

"The passengers disembarked normally. Customers who had booked yesterday's flight [Sunday] between Ponta Delgada and New York are being put on an additional flight today. The scheduled flight is operating as planned," said a Delta source.

Two Delta Air Lines aircraft are parked on the João Paulo Airport apron, in addition to the damaged plane.

Delta Air Lines started daily flights this summer to Ponta Delgada, increasing the capacity to around 400 seats per week.

This summer, the airline has a total of 21 weekly flights between Portugal and the United States, since, in addition to the operation to the Azores, Delta Air Lines operates two daily flights departing from Lisbon, one to New York and a new flight to Boston, which started on 24 May.
