Therefore, the PJ have made 138 arrests per month over the past 12 months, 15 of which would have been for committing sexual crimes against minors.
This was announced by Almeida Rodrigues, director of the PJ, during a ceremony held to commemorate the force’s 70th anniversary, which was presided over by the Minster for Justice Paula Teixeira da Cruz, who will be stepping down from the job.
According to figures released, of the 1,665 arrests almost 40 percent were held in custody; 203 are presumed murderers, 211 are armed robbers, 90 are kidnappers, and 190 are child sex offenders.
PJ police also caught 105 arsonists, 51 weapons traffickers and users, 356 drug traffickers, 16 people traffickers, 62 IT swindlers and 31 people for fiscal fraud and corruption.
Almeida Rodrigues said that, in that same period the PJ seized more than six tonnes of cocaine and over 23 tonnes of hashish, 12 boats, 368 vehicles and 630 guns.
Officers also attached 595 properties and seized 15 million euros as well as suspending financial operations said to be worth in the region of €58 million.
