The police operation, that involved various searches and 11 arrests on 18 November 2014, is related with the acquisition of visas mainly by foreigners investing in Portuguese property and investigated the giving and receiving of bribes, receiving undue advantage, embezzlement, abuse of power and influence peddling.
The case also involves the former general secretary of the justice ministry, Maria Antónia Anes, the former director of the border agency, Jarmela Palos and other senior IRN members of staff.
The case caused the resignation of the internal affairs minister at the time, Miguel Macedo, who was considered a person of interest after being questioned by the public prosecutor.
