Household saved 5% of their disposable income in the 12 months to end-June, against 5.8% for the 12 months to end-March.

The INE began calculating this 12-month rate only from 1999. Only in the second quarter of 2008 did the rate come close to this latest level, at 5.2% in the 12 months to June of that year.

In terms of calendar years, Portugal's household savings rate was at its highest level in 1995, at 12.9%, and at its lowest in 2008, when it was 7.2%.
