“The police are investigating how and why that package got there (beside one of the main pillars)”, a police source said, adding that the package was placed in an area that is off-limits to pedestrians.
Police said that the suspicious package was about 50 centimetres in diameter and covered in plastic and insulating tape.
The bridge was closed to road and rail traffic for about two hours on Monday evening because of the package.
Once bomb experts said the package was not dangerous the Tagus River crossing was reopened.
