In a ceremony held on the pitch atLuz stadium in Lisbon where the entire football structure of Benfica was present as well as the family of the 37-year-old football player from Brazil, Luisão thanked them for the 15 years in Benfica as captain.

“It is not easy. I owe almost everything to president Luís Filipe Vieira, to my wife and my daughters. I look around the stadium and see ‘thank you, Captain’ everywhere, but the time to say ‘thank you, Benfica’ has come”, said the player with more titles in Benfica.

Since he arrived in Lisbon to join Benfica, Luisão has played 538 matches and scored 47 goals, won six championships, three Portuguese Cups, seven Portuguese Leagues and four Supertaças. However, he confessed that an international trophy was missing.

The former capped Brazilian should take the position of director for the club’s international relations in Luz. He elected the goal scored against Sporting in 2005 as one of the best moments, as well as the derby in 2015 against Sporting when he broke his arm, which made him reborn professionally.

At the age of 37, Luisão has ended his career after 15 seasons for Benfica.
