The construction of the Coriscada hydro-agricultural dam and the bet on energy efficiency are two of the highlights of the budget for this year of the Câmara de Mêda, in the district of Guarda, worth 14.7 million Euros.

"As main initiatives on the agenda, we highlight, from the outset, the construction of the Coriscada hydro-agricultural dam, an investment inserted in the Ministry of Agriculture's 'Strategy for Public Irrigation 2014-2020', in a project that will represent an investment of 14 million Euros, and whose candidacy is in the process of being considered", said the president of the municipality of Mêda to Lusa.

According to Anselmo Sousa (PS), the city budget for this year will also "mark the start of the execution of PARU - Urban Rehabilitation Action Plan, which will substantiate a deep requalification of the historic centre of the city of Mêda, in a global investment of 580 thousand Euros".

"We also highlight an investment of around two million Euros in the Acquisition of Energy Efficiency Management Services in the Public Lighting System, an investment that will bring not only a reduction in the energy consumption of lighting in the entire municipality, but will also affirm the municipality in pursuing policies that face the period of climatic emergency that we are going through," he said.

The municipality of Mêda will also continue with the policy of rehabilitating infrastructures in the different parishes, highlighting the requalification of the road connection from the parish of Rabaçal to Estrada Nacional 102.

"It is also foreseen, the continuity of investments with a view to the improvement and requalification of several streets and equipment in the different parishes", said the mayor.

The budget for 2020, which was approved by the Municipal Assembly on 30 December 2019, is about three million Euros higher than that of 2018, "which remained in force throughout 2019, given the impossibility of approving the budget for this year", according to Anselmo Sousa.

The official indicated to Lusa that the council budget for this year is, "above all, a working tool, also the result of a long negotiation effort with the entire municipal executive, as well as with all parties represented in the Municipal Assembly".

"It is a possible budget, but it makes us look at 2020 in an optimistic perspective. We will continue to respond to the emerging needs of municipal activity, promoting initiatives in the various sectors of action: culture, tourism, social action, economic development, among others."

In the opinion of Anselmo Sousa, current times "demand assertive responses, through the implementation of appropriate policies, which respond to the needs of agents in the territory".

"We are convinced that this budget will play an active role in this process," he concluded.
