At the end of 2018, the total extension of Portugal’s rail network remained unchanged compared to the previous year, totaling 3,620.8 kilometres and, on 31 December 2018, there were 370 locomotives, 3,072 freight cars and 999 passenger carriages.

In terms of underground transport, there were 244.1 million passengers using all three metro systems (Lisbon, Porto and South Tagus) in 2018, which corresponds to an increase of 4.3% compared to the previous year.

The Lisbon Metro transported 169.2 million passengers, corresponding to the largest increase among the three metro systems (+4.7%, after +5.4% in 2017 and +7.3% in 2016).

The Porto metro moved 62.7 million passengers, equivalent to an increase of 3.4% (+4.5% in 2017).

Metro Sul do Tejo ensured the transport of 12.3 million users (+3.4%, after +3.6% in 2017).
