According to the 2015 edition of the association’s automobile sector statistics, 156,626 vehicles were produced in Portugal last year, against 161,509 in 2014.
Of last year’s total, 115,468 were light passenger vehicles, 37,134 were light commercial vehicles, and 4,024 were heavy commercial vehicles.
The great majority of vehicles produced in Portugal last year – 150,248 or 95.9 percent – were for export. In 2014, that percentage was 96.3 percent.
Of the four automobile factories in the country, it was Volkswagen Autoeuropa that produced most vehicles, with 102,158 (for a turnover of €1.788 billion), followed by Peugeot Citroën with 46,602 (for a turnover of €398 million), then Mitsubishi Fuso Truck Europe with 6,237 (for turnover of €130.2 million) and Toyota Caetano, with 1,629 (and a turnover of €41.9 million).
As for figures for sales, first published by the ACAP in January, these increased 24 percent in 2015, to a total 213,645 vehicles. Of those, 16,900 were Volkswagens, the second largest brand by sales, despite the scandal involving the faking of emissions test results.
