Four days later it is Austria in Paris and they will finish the first phase by playing Hungary in Lyon on 22 June.
Coach Fernando Santos reacted to the outcome by saying: “I don’t believe in easy draws or difficult draws; I believe in hard work to get results.”
Santos and the Portuguese players must be pleased with the opponents they were handed in the group stage of the tournament in France next summer. Portugal have played Hungary ten times, having never lost and winning seven of the games.
The Seleção last played Iceland six years ago in the EURO 2012 qualifiers and beat them 5-3 and 3-1, surprisingly Cristiano Ronaldo scored only one of the eight goals!
Austria were one of Portugal’s opponents in the European Championships twenty years ago - the last time the two countries met - with the Portuguese taking four points from the two games. If Portugal win the group they will play the runners-up from Group E, which contains Italy, Belgium, Ireland and Sweden.
Elsewhere England will meet Russia, Wales and Slovakia with the Welsh boss Chris Coleman predicting an “absolutely electric atmosphere” when they meet England in Lens on the 16 June.
Northern Ireland, playing in their first EURO Finals, are in a tough group with Germany, Ukraine and Poland. The final takes place in Paris on the 10 July
