Portuguese health officials say continuing increases in confirmed coronavirus cases in the Lisbon region are due to more tests being carried out in areas identified as hotspots.

The Health Ministry on Wednesday announced 366 new cases nationally — the biggest daily increase in almost four weeks.

Officials said 335 of those new cases were in the Lisbon metropolitan area, while the outbreak is waning in the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, the Algarve registered four new coronavirus cases in 24 hours.

According to the General Directorate of Health (DGS), the Algarve region yesterday saw the number of cases rise to 376 since the start of the pandemic, up by four cases on Tuesday.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in the Algarve has not changed, remaining at 15 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
