The court said that Portugal discriminated against used vehicles as regards the devaluation tables it uses.
"Portugal applies the same tax on used vehicles under one year old at the same rate as new vehicles and on vehicles over four years old the rate is 52% regardless of their real state", the court said.
Following this decision, the European Commission (EC) will give Portugal a period of Grace in which to alter its laws.
ANYONE KNOW A LAWYER OR WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT A 1983 CAR MATRICULATED IN 2008 HAVING TO PAY €530 INSTEAD OF 1983 RATE OF €59 ROAD TAX? THANKS IN ADVANCE

Dear Alan, yes, we have an excellent young Portuguese lawyer who speaks fluent French and English and who can probably help. He has saved us lots of money in various ways and has v. good connections. We are in Figueiró dos Vinhos, but if you want his details, email me (don't ring, as we are mostly out working on the garden). Cheers, Jude

My 998cc mini used to cost me 13e a year road tax in Portugal. Matriculated in 2012, now costs me 133e a year in road tax. Anyone know why?
