This is according to fresh figures from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), from January and February 2016.
The numbers indicate 73 people were killed on Portugal’s roads during the aforementioned period, a total which is six fewer than during the same two months of 2015.
However, the number of crashes registered between 1 January and 29 February 2016 rose by ten percent in comparison to the year before, with authorities having registered 21,205 road accidents this year in comparison to the 19,966 last year; 1,966 more.
The highest number of road deaths were registered in Lisbon (12), Aveiro (nine) and Setúbal (eight), whereas on the opposite end of the scale, Viana do Castelo did not register any deaths whatsoever.
ANSR’s figures regarding road deaths include deaths that occurred on the spot and en-route to hospital.
ANSR’s data further shows that 306 people were left seriously injured in crashes during the first two months of this year, one less person that in 2015.
