The pandemic may have left several sectors empty-handed, but tourism in the northern interior of the country is seeing “excellent” and “sold out” results, in a summer marked by the demand for family holidays away from crowds.

In the Douro, since May there has been a gradual opening of hotel units, restaurants and wine shops that had previously been closed to tourists because of the covid-19 pandemic.

T are which has experienced the greatest difficulty has been said to be wine tourism, in terms of visits and tastings, a segment whose main clients were foreigners who came in tourist buses to spend a day in the region.

The president of the Porto and Northern Portugal tourism organisation revealed that the pandemic has reversed the numbers of tourist demand in the region, with the interior now attracting 80 percent of tourists, mostly nationals.
