Last week, Swiss women took their discontent to the streets, calling for equal social and economic rights. Around half a million women adhered to the protests, echoing the 1991 movements which led to the creation of the Gender Equality Act.

In spite of the political recognition of women’s rights, stats from the Swiss Federal Statistics Office show that women earn 19.6% less than their male counterparts.

According to The Global Gender Gap Report 2018 Switzerland is the twentieth most equal country in the world, based on factors such as Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Environment.

On that same report, Portugal was ranked seventeen places lower, in the 37th position.
