Several Ryanair flights and four TAP flights were among those disrupted by the poor weather in northern Portugal’s largest city at the start of this week.
Eight flights scheduled to land at Sá Carneiro were diverted to nearby airports, the majority of them to Santiago de Compostela international airport, in Galicia, Spain, while another six flights to destinations including Brussels, Frankfurt, Madrid and Milan were cancelled.
According to a spokesperson for national airport Management Company ANA, fog is “a phenomenon that can occasionally occur.”
In related news a Transavia Holland flight was forced to make an unscheduled landing at the Algarve’s Faro airport on Monday afternoon due to a problem with the air-conditioning system.
Flight HV118 from Tenerife Sur to Amsterdam was due to land at Schiphol airport at 3.45pm on Monday afternoon, but did not arrive until 10.53pm that night.
The journey, usually carried out on a 189-seat Boeing 737-800, would normally take around four hours and forty minutes. The aircraft spent several hours in the Algarve following the unplanned stop.
A spokesperson for Transavia told The Portugal News: “Flight HV118 from Tenerife to Amsterdam made a stop at Faro Airport due to technical reasons as it had problems with the airco system.
“After local repair the aircraft was serviceable again and with a fresh cockpit and cabin crew the flight continued (delay 7 hrs) to its final destination, Amsterdam.”
