The percentage of students in higher education in Portugal compared to the total number of students rose from 5.8% in 2016 to 6.4% the following year.

Countries with the lowest numbers of foreign exchange students are Croatia (2.9%), Spain (3.2%), Greece (3.4%), Slovenia (3.9%) and Poland (4.1%).

Countries with the highest share of exchange students relative to the total are Luxembourg (46.7%), Cyprus (23.1%), Austria (17.2%), the Czech Republic (12.5%) and the Netherlands (11%).

Overall, between 2013 and 2017, student mobility in the EU increased by 22% to a total of 1.7 million higher education students.
