Mortality in 60 municipalities 1.5 times the five-year average

Mortalities in 60 Portuguese municipalities were 1.5 times higher during December than the average of the last five years for the same period, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

In a bulletin on the impact of Covid-19 on Portuguese territory, INE also noted that 61 percent of new confirmed cases of contagion by the new coronavirus in the last 14 days were recorded in the northern and central regions.

The "exponential increase in new confirmed cases" from 28 December culminated on 13 January with the highest number of new cases at seven days since the beginning of the pandemic: 61,273.
