Cold responsible for a quarter of deaths in Portugal in January

Health Minister said the low temperatures last month were responsible for 24 percent of excess deaths

The cold was responsible for a quarter of deaths in Portugal in January. Portugal’s Health Minister said the low temperatures last month were responsible for 24 percent of excess deaths, while the heat was also partly to blame for a rise in deaths in summer. Last month 19,570 deaths were registered in Portugal, up 64% on the same month of 2020.
