According to the DGS weekly epidemiological bulletin, compared to the previous week, there were 12,699 more cases of infection, with 38 more deaths in the comparison between the two periods.

As for hospital occupancy in mainland Portugal due to Covid-19, the DGS started to release data on hospitalisations for the Monday before the report was published on Fridays.

Based on this criterion, the bulletin indicates that, last Monday, 1,842 people were hospitalized, 392 more than on the same day of the previous week, with 99 patients in intensive care units, 15 more.

According to data from the DGS, the seven-day incidence was, on Monday, at 1,835 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, having registered a growth of 7% in relation to the previous week, while the transmissibility index (Rt) of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 dropped from 1.23 to 1.13 nationally.

By region, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo recorded 66,341 cases between 17 and 23 May, 14,818 more than in the previous period, and 56 deaths, minus one.

The Central region accounted for 28,986 cases (minus 2,346) and 56 deaths (plus two) and the North totalled 71,057 cases of infection (minus 813) and 85 deaths (plus 34).

In the Alentejo, 8,758 positive cases were recorded (390 more) and 18 deaths (two more) and in the Algarve there were 6,548 infections by SARS-CoV-2 (550 more) and 10 deaths (three more).

As for the autonomous regions, the Azores had 5,280 new infections between 17 and 23 May (61 less) and two deaths (two less), while Madeira recorded 2,000 cases in those seven days (161 more) and three deaths (the same number as than the previous week).

According to the DGS, the age group between 40 and 49 years old was the one with the highest number of cases within seven days (33,255), followed by people between 50 and 59 years old (29,691), while children up to nine years were the group with the fewest infections (9,115) this week.
