After a week in which diesel rose, fuel prices will drop next Monday. While the price of a litre of diesel is expected to fall by 6.5 cents, the price of petrol will drop by seven cents, a source in the sector told ECO.

Between the 5 and 11 September, consumers can expect to pay 1.827 euros per litre for plain diesel - a reduction of 6.5 cents - and 1.71 euros per litre for petrol - seven cents less - according to the average prices at gas stations last week, published by the Directorate General for Energy and Geology (DGEG).

These figures may still be subject to adjustments, taking into account the closing of Brent prices this Friday and the behaviour of the foreign exchange market.

In recent days, the Brent crude oil index (the reference contract for Europe) has accumulated losses of 8%, having traded below 93 dollars per barrel at the end of Thursday afternoon. However, this Friday, prices rose 2.76% to 94.91 dollars. In New York, WTI crude advanced 2.81% to 89.05 dollars, after having reached the lowest price since 28 January the day before.

This week, the government announced the extension of measures to mitigate the effects of the rise in fuel prices, including discounts on the Tax on Petroleum Products (ISP) on fuel, suspension of the update of the carbon tax and also discounts for agricultural diesel.

Thus, the discount on the ISP equivalent to a decrease in the VAT rate from 23% to 13% - a measure introduced in May - will be maintained during the month of September. According to the Ministry of Finance's accounts, the reduction in the tax burden is 28.2 cents per litre of diesel and 32.1 cents per litre of petrol.
