Carlos Moedas expects that, this year, despite the war in Ukraine, Lisbon will reach 85 percent of the occupancy rate of 2019, and that, in 2023, even pre-pandemic numbers will be exceeded. But for that, “a new airport is urgent”, insisted the mayor.

“All the discussions on tourism do not exist without a new airport”, continued the mayor, repeating the idea that, without this infrastructure, “we have no future”. In this sense, he left the Government with two “requests”.

On the one hand, “Lisboetas want speed. We need a decision in 2023. The necessary studies have been carried out and we cannot wait any longer”, said Carlos Moedas.

On the other hand, location is also important, he stressed. “Lisbon airport is Lisbon's international airport and it has to be close to Lisbon, to be close to locals and business people. I am not measuring by kilometres, but proximity, and that is extremely important”, said the mayor.
