city of Porto the layout and development of the high-speed line between Lisbon,
Porto and Vigo. It will be the first structuring axis of our insertion in the
Iberian high-speed network”, declared the prime minister.
In the Prime Minister's perspective, "for sustainable
tourism in Portugal, the country needs good infrastructure, namely in terms of
transport".
“It was very important for the Assembly of the Republic to
have approved the National Infrastructure Plan with a very large majority,
which allows us to overcome one of the great historical obstacles in the
country, which is the high-speed connection between Lisbon and Porto”, he
added.

Is it known how this is related to a connection to Madrid?

May the connection be from Porto to Madrid and Paris to Porto. Those are the most direct routes east to west and reverse, because all of the major cities in Europe are North of Lisbon. As you may know, the studies have been done to support this feasibility. Now the Spanish and Portuguese governments need to support it! Around half of the Portuguese live in the North and with the people of Lisbon being only one hour away from Porto by high speed rail over 75% of the country will live within one hour of Porto. Lisbon will never be able to say the same and enough nonsense about it being the capital. People care about speed convenience and use. This is why Germany still focused more on connections on its cities in the West than its capital Berlin. Nothing against Lisbon or Berlin I love visiting each city.
