The mayor of the municipality, André Martins, highlighted the “complexity” of the project, taking into account that the Sado Estuary is a “sensitive area” and that there is a need to take into account its impacts “on the city and in particular on the riverfront”.

André Martins underlined the need for further steps to be taken so that the preliminary study proceeds to the design phase and, afterwards, the “great objective” of having a marina in Setúbal can be achieved.

“It is expected that the marina, which aims to be an excellent infrastructure to support recreational boating, will be able to receive superyachts measuring up to 50 meters in length. The study also provides for the improvement of conditions to accommodate small cruise ships, including the implementation of a passenger station, and the provision of an exclusive area for the operation of maritime-tourist vessels”.

The intention is to launch the international public tender within a year.
