The number of lawyers registered with the Bar Association (OA) has never been as high as in 2021, while there have never been so many women practicing this profession.

According to data from the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ) of the Ministry of Justice, in 2021, 33,937 lawyers were registered with the Order, a record number. Over the last few years this number has been growing, with only seven drops in the number of lawyers registered in the years 1988, 1991, 1996, 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2019. The Order updated this data and counted just over 35 thousand, in total, with interns.

The biggest drop was in 2007 when 22,345 lawyers were registered compared to 25,716 in 2006, that is, a decrease of 3,371. But there was a reason for this decline: Marinho and Pinto were in charge of the position and for a few months of that year there was a suspension of registration of trainee lawyers.
