Gonçalo was born into a fishing family in Lagos in 1360. He is the Patron Saint of Lagos.
He spent the majority of his adult life in a monastery in Torres Vedras as a Friar of the Order of the Hermits of Saint Augustine and ministered to the poor.
Castelo de Lagos has a shrine dedicated to St Gonçalo. He is also the Patron Saint of the fishermen of the Algarve.
