“Of the total number of people who were unemployed in the second quarter, 50.3% (163.2 thousand) remained in that state in the third quarter of 2023, 25.3% (82.2 thousand) transitioned to employment and 24.4% (79.2 thousand) transitioned to inactivity“, says the statistics office.
It should be noted that to be considered unemployed, and not inactive, you must be open to embracing a new job and actively looking for new opportunities. This means that the 79.2 thousand unemployed people who became inactive in the third quarter stopped looking for a new job or, at least, did not become open to starting a new opportunity.
On the other hand, among those who were employed in the second quarter, 1.3% (67.1 thousand) became unemployed and 2.2% (111.4 thousand) became inactive in the third quarter. In other words, the majority of these individuals (96.4% or 4.8 million people) remained employed between the quarters mentioned.
However, not everyone continued in the same jobs or with the same type of employment relationship. Around 3% changed jobs – 160.3 thousand individuals are involved –, with this share decreasing by 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous three months.
Among people who were self-employed, 10.9% (77.3 thousand) transitioned to employed work, indicates INE.
The statistics office adds that, of the total number of dependent workers who had a fixed-term contract or another type of contract in the second quarter, 21.8% (164.9 thousand) started to have an open-ended contract in the third quarter.
On the other hand, among people who were working part-time, almost two in ten started working full-time in the quarters in question. At stake are 77.5 thousand individuals.
