"A mass of dry and very cold air" is expected in mainland Portugal. Meanwhile there will also be moderate precipitation and snowfall is expected above 1,000 meters, according to the forecast from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
According to the IPMA, the weather next week "will be influenced by the positioning of an anticyclone in the British Isles and a depression at altitude, which will induce an easterly flow of cold weather over the mainland from Tuesday, the 9th".
After a weekend of cold and dry weather, on Monday, the 8th, the IPMA notes that "we will have a depression system crossing the territory, with moderate precipitation and likely snowfall above 1,000 meters". From the 9th, Tuesday, "an easterly flow is imposed, bringing with it a mass of dry and very cold air".
"The coexistence of a depression at altitude brings the possibility of some showers until Friday, the 12th, which if they occur will be in the form of snow in the highlands. During the nights the formation of ice or frost is expected, especially in the interior North and Center", it reads.
From the end of the 12th, "a change in the weather will begin, with the flow becoming from the western quadrant and a generalized rise in temperature, and throughout the weekend of the 13th and 14th expects the occurrence of precipitation throughout the continental territory".
As for temperatures, the "minimum is expected to be below 5°C until Friday in almost the entire territory, with the exception of some places along the coast". In the North and Center interior, "minimum temperatures will even be negative during this period, and should vary between -5°C and -1°C". From Saturday, the 13th, with the rise in temperatures, "values for the weekend are expected to be between -1°C and 5°C in the North and Center interior regions, between 5°C and 10°C in southern region and between 6°C and 12°C in coastal areas".
The maximum, between the 8th and 12th of January, "should vary between 2°C and 9°C in the North and Central interior regions, between 9°C and 14°C in the South region, between 10°C and 16° C in the west coastal zone and between 12°C and 17°C in the south coastal zone". Over the weekend, "maximum temperatures are expected to rise to values between 6°C and 12°C in the North and Central interior regions, between 12°C and 18°C in the South region and between 13°C and 18°C in the entire coastal strip".
