“The inauguration flight is scheduled for October 15, 2024, with PLAY Airlines offering weekly flights, every Tuesday, through the new route between Madeira and Iceland”, the Icelandic low-cost airline announced on March 5.

Birgir Jónsson, CEO of PLAY Airlines, expressed excitement regarding the opening of the new route, especially because “Madeira is an absolutely stunning island”, which will generate “a lot of interest and demand for flights between Iceland and Madeira”.

“We have more competitive prices in comparison to the opposition in all the countries we fly to, our aim is to make travel more accessible”, added the person in charge.

PLAY Airlines began operating in June 2021, with a current fleet of 10 Airbus A320/321 neo aircraft, which connect North America to Europe, with Iceland as the central hub.

In 2022, the airline began operating a seasonal route to Lisbon, which quickly became an annual demand, and in 2023, PLAY opened a second route to Porto, which is available during the summer.

Madeira has become PLAY Airlines’ third destination in Portugal, with one connection per week, from October 15, every Tuesday.
