Portugal is known for its history and the beauty of its cities, which are the calling cards for tourists who come to the country. Those coming from abroad may not notice these details, but Portugal has several places whose names are somewhat strange at first glance. According to a report by Postal, some of the strangest places include Rego do Azar (Ponte de Lima), Picha (Pedrógão Grande) and Colo do Pito (Castro D'Aire).

The Algarve is not left behind when it comes to places with strange names. The name Purgatório (in English Purgatory), is also the name of a place near the village of Paderne, in Albufeira. The name of this place is among the strangest in Portugal. It was more than 200 years ago that Purgatory appeared in Albufeira. There was only one tavern there, which was frequented by men who spent the entire afternoon and evening there drinking wine and brandy.

Their distressed wives went to the tavern several times with their children to convince their husbands to return home, not only to spend more time with their family but also to not spend any more money. That's why the complaining women started calling this tavern Purgatório and, since this place which had no name, Purgatório ended up being the best solution, according to a report broadcast by TVI.

This is not the only place in the Algarve with a strange name, as you can also come across Sítio das Solteiras, in Tavira, and Mata Porcas, in Lagos.
