It is the first of several infrastructure projects that the Defence Forces will unveil this year.

The three stories and six distinct wings of the recently constructed €4.5 million lodging facility house the rooms, which are divided into single en suite rooms and four-person dormitories.

Tánaiste and Minister of Defence Micheál Martin led the ceremonial inauguration, joined by Major General Adrian Ñ Murchú, Deputy Chief of Staff Support for the Defence Forces.

During the opening ceremony, 1 Brigade Artillery Regiment Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Peadar Ó Catháin stated that the additional accommodations are appropriate as two residential career courses are now being held at the barracks and a new recruit platoon is scheduled to arrive later this year.

Lieutenant Colonel Catháin said the Defence Forces understands that “our people are our greatest asset and as such we expect that the availability of modern, comfortable accommodation would be an additional incentive, not only for personnel to remain within the Defence Forces but as an incentive for personnel who seek a career that provides unprecedented opportunities and a life less ordinary.”

It is the first of many infrastructure projects that the Defence Forces are expected to launch this year. Work at the Renmore barracks in County Galway is scheduled to conclude in July, while the renovation of Block 4 at the Haulbowline naval facility is now underway.

At a cost of €56 million, the scheme consists of around 10 accommodation projects that will eventually supply 565-bed places throughout the nation.

The investment in defensive infrastructure, according to Mr. Martin, is “unparalleled in the country's history” and is a component of the defensive Forces' larger investment and transformation effort.
