"Based on the analysis of the available documentation and the nature of the damage caused, it was possible to classify both phenomena as tornadoes," IPMA stressed in a statement.
The first event occurred at 8:10 am in the Porto Peles area, in Beja, while the second was recorded at 1 pm in Degolados, Campo Maior, in the district of Portalegre.
According to IPMA, the tornadoes may have reached an intensity of F1/T2 (classic Fujita scale/Torro scale), corresponding to maximum instantaneous winds between 118 and 148 kilometres per hour.
The damage included roofs of homes, electricity poles and trees, the institute said.
A source from the Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of Alto Alentejo told Lusa today that the extreme wind phenomenon had caused damage to houses, sheds, a football pitch, electricity stations and fallen trees in Campo Maior.
The same source added that one person was treated at the scene.
The phenomenon that occurred near Beja uprooted trees, caused damage to houses and a car and caused a wall to collapse, without causing injuries, according to the mayor.
