Responding to the call, officers from the GNR’s Nature and Environmental Protection Service (SEPNA) quickly arrived at the location. Upon assessing the situation, they confirmed the owl was unable to fly and proceeded with its safe capture.

The injured bird was then transported to the Wildlife Recovery Centre (CRAS) at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) in Vila Real. There, it is receiving the necessary veterinary care. Once fully recovered, the owl is expected to be released back into its natural habitat.

The barn owl, known for its distinctive white face and silent flight, plays an important role in controlling rodent populations. Protecting such species is vital to maintaining ecological balance.

The GNR emphasised the importance of public cooperation in protecting wildlife and preserving biodiversity. Authorities encouraged citizens to report similar cases of injured or endangered animals through the SOS Environment and Territory hotline.

This incident highlights the value of community awareness and rapid response in wildlife conservation efforts. Thanks to the vigilance of a concerned citizen and the prompt action by SEPNA, this barn owl now has a chance to recover and return to the wild.
