While the primary aim is to protect these animals, the charity’s heartfelt mission is to secure loving homes for as many as possible—whether through adoption, fostering, or sponsorship of individual cats.

The shelter, run entirely by volunteers, operates year-round to feed, clean, and care for the animals. Led by President Corinna, the dedicated international team also carries out outreach work to support colonies of stray cats across the region. Every day, volunteers are on site providing food, fresh bedding, and vital social interaction for the cats.
With “Kitten Season” now in full swing, the shelter is particularly busy. Three mother cats are currently nursing 16 kittens, and more are expected. The charity urgently needs help to find forever homes—not only for the kittens but for their mothers too.

There are many ways to get involved. As well as hands-on help at the shelter, there are volunteer opportunities in social media, communications, fundraising events, transporting cats to and from vet appointments, site maintenance, and much more. Whether you’re a student, a retiree, or simply someone who loves animals, there’s a place for you on the team.

The charity also welcomes veterinary students through its structured work experience programme, offering practical training in feline care, treatment, and welfare. This is a unique opportunity to gain invaluable experience while making a difference.

The Carvoeiro Cat Charity is also home to a feline blood bank—an essential and life-saving service providing emergency transfusions for sick or injured cats across Portugal.
