The study, conducted by MattressNextDay, evaluated major cities across Europe based on factors such as light pollution, traffic congestion, hotel quality, safety, and wellness facilities.

The capital of Madeira scored 75.62 out of 100, thanks to its exceptionally low light pollution (1.7 mcd/m²), minimal traffic congestion (22%), and the highest safety rating among all cities analysed (80.03). Funchal also leads in pedestrian routes and offers excellent access to green spaces and fitness centres – factors shown to improve sleep quality. Top wellness-focused hotels include Belmond Reid’s Palace and Monte Palace, while nearby walking trails like the Levada do Caldeirão Verde offer nature immersion in the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva forest.

In second place is Bergen, Norway, with a score of 66.59. The city boasts Europe’s lowest traffic congestion (14%) and strong safety and wellness scores. Its fjord-side setting, tranquil atmosphere, and spa offerings – such as Vannkanten Waterworld – make it ideal for a relaxing escape.

Lausanne, Switzerland, ranks third with 56.43 points. Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, Lausanne offers the lowest light pollution (1.3 mcd/m²) and high hotel soundproofing standards. With its relaxed pace, scenic waterfront, and wellness spas like Bains de Lavey, it’s ideal for winding down.

The trend of sleep-focused getaways is growing fast. In 2025, two in five travellers said sleep quality was a key factor when choosing accommodation. Searches for “sleep retreats” have doubled, with the European wellness tourism sector projected to reach $298.98 billion this year.

Sleep expert Martin Seeley explains: “Consistent routines and calming environments are key to good sleep. Destinations with low noise, nature, and dark skies allow travellers to reset and return home feeling refreshed – something we can all learn to recreate in our daily lives.”
