In a statement, the GNR says that Operation "Dionísio," which begins today and ends on October 31, aims to "gather information and prevent the illegal introduction of wine into the Portuguese market, contributing to the peace of mind of operators and the regular functioning of this sector."

The GNR notes that Portugal generally presents itself as having a production deficit, which is why bulk wines originating in Spain are entering legally, whether Spanish or European Union (EU) wines.

"On the other hand, the illegal movement of wine occurs in cisterns or vats, introducing wines with protected designation of origin (DOP) and protected geographical indication (PGI) into current accounts. These wines can enter legally, but they are mixed with Portuguese wines," according to the police.

The GNR notes that during harvest season and up until November 30th, a greater mass of wine enters the warehouses, thus increasing the likelihood of them entering the warehouses without documentation and/or fraudulently.
